I recently started watching ABC’s American Housewife on Hulu and it brings a vast range of emotions. It starts off with a family that moved into Westport, Connecticut, a city full of higher class families. Right off the bat, you can tell that the Otto family do not belong socially with the city’s atmosphere. If there is one thing that most ABC sitcom families share, it’s the feeling they’re not quite fitting in with their neighbors.
The show’s main protagonist is Katie Otto. You can tell that she does not want to be in Westport, and she does not want to be part of the community with all the “rich skinny moms.” The reason that she decided to deal with all the rich people of Westport is that her younger daughter, Anna-Kat Otto, needs to be in a special education program. The special education program in Westport is one of the best programs in the United States that Anna-Kat needs.
You can tell that the kids, Taylor Otto and Oliver Otto, are fitting in with the kids of Westport. Taylor is friends with the popular pretty girls at school, which Katie calls “future moms of Westport.” Katie does not want her daughter, Taylor, to end up being a “future trophy wife,” so she prefers her to not socialize with all of the pretty girls. Oliver has the ambition to become one of the successful people of Westport. He always pretends to have money so he can be accepted with his peers. Katie believes that his ambition is making him obnoxious and stuck-up. Anna-Kat has an interesting personality and needs a lot of attention, or she’ll scheme something devious.
American Housewife is fascinating to watch and I recommend it to anyone who wants to have something playing in the background, or if you can use a quick laugh.
